Occasionally I get messages or posts on facebook from people who say they love my work but say they can't afford it. Sometimes there are sad stories behind it also. I recently had a message from a poor lady who's house had been flooded and she had lost all but one album of photo's of her children. She said she really wants a portrait done to hang on her new walls when they are done. I have entered her in my latest giveaway of course and wish her lots of luck! I wish I could afford to give everyone a free portrait, it can be a lot of money to part with especially in this day and age (although I have made a commitment to offer affordable work). I do believe though that EVERY household deserves to have a piece of art to treasure on their lives. This is why I have made a bit of a commitment to philanthropy.
I am not rich, far from it in fact (see last post!) but we're comfortable and my children are fed, and clothed so I'm more than able to give away work/vouchers (within reason obviously ). I am currently running a competition for a free portrait as a way to give back to everyone who supports my work on my facebook page, and I just gave £20 worth of vouchers to my local am dram raffle. The picture on this post is the winning portrait from a giveaway I ran last year. This is something I plan to do fairly regularly if I can. It doesn't take much to 'like' or leave a quick comment but its these comments that make a big difference to me and my little business so its nice to give back. I am often surprised when people leave comments such as 'that's an amazingly generous prize wow!' My work is pure joy for me, especially knowing that it can really make a difference in peoples lives. Its also a really good way to advertise so why wouldn't I!
